There are many benefits of exercising outdoors, including that it leads to an improvement in mental wellbeing. Studies have found that exercising in natural environments is associated with greater feelings of revitalisation, increased energy and positive engagement, together with reductions in tension, confusion, anger and depression.
As spring approaches, it is a good opportunity to make the most of what London has to offer in terms of outdoor exercise options. The health benefits of swimming are phenomenal, and, if you are feeling brave, hitting the outdoor pools in London is not only refreshing but also invigorating and great exercise.
One of the most famous outdoor locations to swim is The Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park where the regulars take a daily dip even in freezing conditions. From May to September everyone is welcome in one section of the lake and there is even a spot for relaxation where you can hire sun loungers to relax after your strenuous swim.
One of my personal favourites is Hampstead Ponds where there is a separate ladies, men and mixed pond. The men’s and ladies’ ponds are open all year round but to use the Mixed Pond in the winter season you must join the Hampstead Heath Winter Swimming Club. The main obstacle to your swimming technique here will be the ducks obstructing your stroke and the occasional muddy leaf which gets stuck in your ear.
For those of you who may prefer a concrete pool with chlorinated water, there are also numerous lidos around the city. These include Parliament Hill, Tooting Bec, Brockwell, Hillingdon, London Fields, Hampton Pool and Richmond Pools. More information on these can be found online.
So, now you have the information there’s nothing stopping you getting outdoors and swimming this spring. It will increase your fitness and strength, reduce muscle tension and improve your general health and wellbeing.
