A Day in the Life of a Hydrotherapist

A Typical Day?

A mere five minute walk from Sloane Square, our physiotherapy and hydrotherapy clinic is located within the Margaret Thatcher Infirmary, inside the Royal Hospital Chelsea, otherwise known as ‘The Chelsea Pensioners’. We are surrounded by beautiful gardens and open spaces which just make it, simply put, a happy place to work in!

Having a hydrotherapy pool here, alongside our physiotherapy and gym facilities, makes for a really varied and interesting day. We have different shift patterns, either 8am-4pm or 11am-7pm, divided between hydrotherapy and land based clinics.

Rehabilitation in the Pool

Rehabilitation in the water is not only very enjoyable but also produces excellent results and is loved by our patients. The water temperature is kept at a warm 34-36 degrees, which allows for a comfortable, therapeutic environment for exercise while prompting muscle relaxation, facilitation of stretching and pain reduction. It provides support, assistance or resistance to the patient in the rehabilitative process.

Varied Caseloads

Our caseload in the pool varies between rehabilitating post-surgical patients, ranging from arthroscopies for pelvic related hip impingement in sports-people to joint replacements, often in older people.  We also treat many patients struggling with musculoskeletal conditions that need muscle strengthening, especially beneficial to those who are unable to fully bear weight.

We also offer self-hydro sessions which our patients to allow for further practice and self-management. These may be done in addition to their one-to-one sessions where advice on exercise progressions are given.

Classes with a Difference

Central Health Physiotherapy also provide classes for a group of pensioners on a weekly basis, which are run by one of our physiotherapists or assistants.  This lively weekly exercise circuit session often becomes a jovial singalong, loved by them all.

Team Time

The team here is supported by our fabulous assistant team who look after the pool and ensure our patients are kept safe whilst getting in and out of the pool. The whole team are extremely welcoming, helpful and dynamic who are always on the go and ready to implement change. During the summer months we are lucky to be able to enjoy our team lunches whilst enjoying the gorgeous surrounding gardens.
