Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis: Speed Up Your Recovery

Contents

Shockwave Therapy forPlantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is a painful condition that is felt in the heel and around the foot arch. It’s caused by overuse, or over stretching, of the Plantar Fascia – a thick, fibrous ligament that runs below the heel to the front of the foot, to support the arch of the foot and provide shock absorption. When the Plantar Fascia is damaged in this way it causes inflammation and can be very painful to walk on.

Our advanced Shockwave Therapy can provide rapid pain relief and when combined with a structured exercise programme can speed up recovery times.

Shockwave Treatment

Shockwave Therapy is an evidence-based treatment used to treat a wide range of ligament and tendon injuries. It’s sometimes referred to as acoustic wave therapy, since it involves the application of concentrated sound waves through the skin to the affected ligament or tendon. It has been proven to provide effective pain relief for many of our patients within the first session of treatment, and the majority of our patients within the first three treatment sessions.

When applying shockwave for Plantar Fasciitis, our expert physiotherapist will first put some ultrasound gel around the treatment area on the bottom of the foot and on the shockwave therapy handheld device.

The shockwaves are delivered via a series of compressed air pulses to the affected Plantar Fascia. This has a two fold effect:

1. It helps to reduce pain by desensitising the sore tissues.
2. It increases blood flow to stimulate the damaged tissues, encouraging the body’s natural regeneration and healing processes.

The physiotherapist will then work with you to gradually increase the intensity in a way that best suits your injury and your personal needs.

The whole treatment takes around 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
