Soft Tissue Injury

A soft tissue injury is an injury that occurs to any structure in the body other than bone. This can include skin, muscle, fascia (the structure that surrounds muscles - much like the shiny tough white stuff surrounding the meat on a joint of beef), tendons, ligaments, cartilage, discs and nerves, to name but a few. Damage to these tissues can be as a result of trauma or due to overuse, degeneration or infection.

As you can imagine, the list of soft tissue structures that can be injured is a pretty long one! The job of your physiotherapist is to try and determine which one is most likely to be at fault and thus give you an idea of how long it is going to take you to get better. Your physio should also give you an idea of what things you can do to help yourself and what they can do to help you in your recovery.
