Performance and
Wellbeing Centre
in the City |
Most New Year resolutions will be broken by now! However many people are aspiring to achieve health and happiness and gyms seem busier than ever.
The first step towards a healthy lifestyle is to set realistic goals and devise a programme with achievable targets. Most resolutions regarding weight loss, for example, fail because the expectations are absurd and people get impatient hoping to see fat melt away in a few days. A sensible diet, cutting the portions and drinking in moderation, combined with increased activity will help shed ungainly pounds.
The average Londoner getting off the Tube one stop early and walking vigorously to their final destination every day is likely to achieve a health promoting dose of exercise!
It makes sense to seek professional advice though - especially if you are a novice unsure what you want to achieve, or if you want to adjust your goals to reach the next level.
The Central Health Physiotherapy Performance and Wellbeing Centre in the City has a full team to help you devise a programme adapted to your requirements, level and ability. |

'Direct link between exercise and improved performance at work'

Professor Greg Whyte and
Simon Shepard |
"Central Health Physiotherapy first HR Seminar featured impressive presentations from Greg Whyte PhD FACSM, Professor of Applied Sport & Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University and fitness expert for many celebrities, and Simon Shepard MCSP, joint Managing Director of Central Heath Physiotherapy and CEO of sister company Optima-life." |
Talking to an audience of H.R. professionals, occupational health specialists and business coaches, Greg and Simon demonstrated how exercise, good diet and relaxation are the route to improved performance in the work place. Highlights included:
Long Term Conditions
Research data, White Papers and Government campaigns show the need to get the nation moving. Long term conditions such as obesity, diabetes and mental health issues coupled with an aging population are taking their toll not only on the NHS but also on performance in the workplace.
Value of Work Site Health Promotion Activities
A series of Work Site Health Promotion studies showed a direct correlation between exercise, improved physical capacity and Cardio Vascular Health. Simple activities such as organized group walks, 4 x 30 minutes weekly, over an 8 week period produced stunning results.
Defining Stress
Stress at work seems a characteristic of our times. Defining it as a psychological or physiological state that occurs when a load exceeds a threshold, the cost of stress through its effect on health, with reduced life expectancy and cardiovascular disease; on productivity, with over 50% of absence directly due to stress and 13.8 million days lost per annum; and on the economy is estimated at over £300million. |

Relationship between physical activity and
risk of chronic disease. |
Measuring Stress in Real-Time with Personalised Physiological Data
Tools are now available to map physiological behaviours, determining clearly elements of physical and non physical stress, matched against the body's ability to recover. Such assessments can be carried out in real-time reflecting real-life conditions. While we can all cope with a degree of overload in our lives, constant stress will inevitably lead to illness and long-term health issues. Recognising and measuring stress is the first stage in the process to improved health and performance. It is then essential to implement strategies to develop a lifestyle with a balance of exercise, healthy diet and relaxation. |
Vikki Thorne, Senior Occupational Health Advisor, BUPA Wellness, Merrill Lynch Europe summed up the seminar saying: 'It was a very good evidence based seminar explaining why employers should be investing and supporting the health and well-being of working age people.'
The next seminar takes place on Tuesday 16th March in the City on the theme of 'Healthy People, Healthy Performance'. The speakers are Professor Greg Whyte - back by popular demand - and Dean Patterson, Health and Productivity Manager, Unilever UK.
