Le Tour de France

Probably the most grueling cycle race of all!

The Tour de France ended on the Champs Elysées last weekend and it always amazes me how tough this race is. It does indeed stretch participants to the limit and combines endurance, speed, stamina, guts and determination to climb the Alps and Pyrénées mountains, as well as individual and team work.

Some cyclists seem to relish the experience, as this year's winner, Spaniard Alberto Contador, has won it for the third time! I was sad to see that seven times winner Lance Armstrong could only manage to finish 23rd and the first Brit, Olympic Champion Bradley Wiggins, 24th after a promising 2009 start in le Tour when he came fourth.

I was delighted to see that Mark Cavendish claimed the stage last Thursday in the 18th stage of le Tour, his fourth stage win of this year's Tour de France! What a pity that he missed the Green Jersey, awarded for sprint points, after his heroic effort in the final Champs Elysées stage.

I was interested to hear from a colleague that keen cyclists make it a hobby to follow some of the Tour stages. We are geared at Central Health Physiotherapy to support them with physio treatment to make sure they are in top condition, one on one personal training at our Farringdon Performance and Wellbeing Centre, and we can perform a Biomechanical cycling assessment on our Turbo Trainer at Chancery Lane or St Johns Wood, to make sure their bikes are set for optimum performance, checking saddle and handlebar height.

I'll watch out for these intrepid cyclists next year!
