Great North Run
As usual I watched this unique race on television at the weekend.
After living and working in Newcastle for 8 years I have become very fond of the event. I must confess to only treating the before and after effects of it rather than running in it myself! (although I have done a few Blaydon races).
These events provide a great focus for people to start getting fit and I read even Jimmy 'Five Bellies' Gardner, Gazza's best mate, took on this challenge and managed to lose 8 stones in the process! Putting in place a realistic and achievable goal is important but just getting out and putting in the miles is vital for these distances. There are many good websites to help you plan a training schedule but unfortunately musculoskeletal problems can still occur.
Simple advice like good footwear and some basic strengthening and stretching are important but sometimes additional treatment is required to keep you on track. The most common problems which we treat at Central Health Physiotherapy tend to focus around the knee but foot, hip and back pain are also seen regularly. Alongside our expertise in treating running injuries, we offer running assessments that can be a great tool to identify problem areas or to improve performance.
So why not set yourself a target and get jogging!
