Joint hypermobility

Hypermobility is a common condition which is sometimes referred to as being "double-jointed".

It usually occurs because some people have a more "stretchy" form of connective tissue. Connective tissue occurs throughout the body and is contained in skin, hair, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. As it is more stretchy in people with hypermobility, this can result in joints which are more mobile than most people's. For many with hypermobility, this is a great advantage. Some of the best pianists, violinists and musicians are hypermobile, as their flexible fingers and wrists allow them to achieve notes many musicians would struggle with. Many of our 2012 gymnastic athletes are hypermobile and some of world's most graceful ballet dancers have used their hypermobility to great advantage.
