Gemma Newell is back from the GB Pro Series $25k Event
An enjoyable week at Foxhills and great experience! I was privileged to be the physio in charge at last week’s women’s AEGON GB Pro-Series $25k event which took place at Foxhills Club and Resort in Woking.
The singles event was won by Timea Babos of Hungary who ‘bagged’ her first singles title at $25k level by beating the third seed, Britain’s Katie O’Brien, 7-5, 6-4. Timea, the world junior No. 3, who trains at the LTA International High Performance Centre at Gosling, had beaten Laura Robson (GBR) and also the number 2 seed Sania Mirza from India on route to the final. Mirza, who used to be in the top 30 in the world, was recently in the press for her controversial marriage to the Pakistani Cricketer, Shoaib Malik.
Timea Babos capped a perfect tournament by also claiming the doubles title with her Finnish partner Emma Laine, as they beat the third seeds, Jocelyn Rae (GBR) & Emelyn Starr (AUS), in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
With fairly good weather conditions there were luckily no bad acute injuries needing my attention but overall I was able to make a positive impact with players carrying overuse injuries from the busy grass circuit.
I did certainly notice a big difference though treating young fit professional individuals as opposed to the older ex pro’s at the national Club league finals last year!
Let’s see what the clay surface at the British junior tennis Nationals in Bournemouth in a few weeks time will produce!
